Because it undermines the authority of the umpire and leads to endless breaks in play in a game that can be painfully slow at the best of times.

First test with the new DRS parameters with the 'hitting' part extended on the stumps to 90% of the stump. Think Stokes 1st LBW would have been umpires call a couple of months back. Changed due to the fact umpires getting too much benefit when the ball was smashing into the stumps. Will help the India bowlers though interesting how they go with it now they will finally use it.

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
Why wouldn't you want to review a marginal (wrong) call? It's still a mistake.

SurfaceAgentX2Zero 4:13 Mon Oct 24
Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
The reason they lose a review is that they are supposed to be challenging rank bad decisions, not trying it on over marginal calls.

Very true! They should probably get to keep their review at the very least.

It's given not out and they lose a review as well.
Harsh

regardless of what the umpire said.

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
I still find it annoying that you can have a situation where the bowling team can appeal a not out decision from the umpire only to be shown on hawkeye the ball was actually hitting, but the batsman remains in because it goes with the umpire's (incorrect) original call.

I know there's a certain margin for error, but still very frustrating. I think if hawkeye says it's hitting, the result should be that it's out.

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
The first Stokes wicket was hitting full on yet was designated umpire's call. How? it's knocking the leg stump out of the ground!

Umpire's call is crap. They should do away with it, because it has a major impact on the success of the review. If the ball hits the stumps, fuck off.

Sven Roeder 2:08 Mon Oct 24
Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
I still find it hard to see a ball hit the pads and be shown to be clipping the stumps and there to be two possible outcomes for an umpire looking at a screen.
I guess all you can say is that at least DRS gives more correct decisions and is a positive thing.
The sooner an equivalent arrives in football the better.

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
The LBW law states, if, IN THE OPINION OF THE UMPIRE, the ball WOULD have hit the stumps. The 'umpires call' thing, to an extent, keeps that principle intact. DRS only overturns bad decisions, not marginal ones, which in my opinion is as it should be.

Sven Roeder 1:39 Mon Oct 24
Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
I must admit I do feel sorry for the umpires as some of the lbw's and bat pads are very difficult on these sort of wickets.
I wouldn't have thought either of todays decisions were out on first viewing.
Still reckon they need to get rid of this 'umpires call' where the same ball can be in or out following a review dependent on the first call.

The Ali ones were funny as he seemed determined to fire him out when he was batting and much more reluctant to give them when Ali was bowling.
Now that India are using DRS I think they can go back to using the BEST umpires rather than neutrals even if that means English umpires do home and away Tests.
Will help retain umpires as well if they have the chance to umpire home Tests and not just have to travel all the time.

The 3 Moeen reviews were hilarious, just because they came one after the other in the space of 10 minutes.

But for DRS, England would have lost that game thanks to the umpiring.

Trent Bridge apart (I will never get bored of watching the aussies fall apart against seam and late swing) I agree with you.
Even Gary Ballance can look good and that is never a good thing

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
Think there were so many though as the same umpire kept fucking up.

Before the new rules of the ball just needing to be clipping the stumps, 90% of reviews were for the sake of it and failed.

This review fiasco will be looked at for sure, 26 !....maybe just give each team 1 review

Only watched the daily Highlights on ITV4 and have to say it was enjoyable... give me a wicket like that any day over the featherbeds we deal up over here for our test matches...

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
I must admit I have given up paying £70+ for a days Test cricket at Lords and happily watch it on tv now.
Was in Perth last week and saw they were offering family tickets for 2 adults and 2 kids for the equivalent of about £40 for next weeks Australia v S Africa Test at the WACA.
Even then I don't think it wll be full ..... ground will probably only be sold out for Perth Scorchers games in the Big Bash during the summer.

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
I suspect there is so much ODI and T20 cricket out there that spectators have to save their pennies for that - understandable, because you get a result in a day and it's a better spectacle.

But these people love and know their cricket and follow the tests fanatically on TV, where, to be honest, you get the better view required to appreciate test cricket's subtleties

Re: 1st Test Bangladesh v England at Chittagong
Always only ever been England selling out most tests with then oz and the saffas also getting people through the gates depending on the opponents.

All the others have been obsessed with the short form years.
